Charlene learned about Central Delaware Habitat for Humanity by doing online research. After volunteering at the build site to see how everything works, she knew she wanted to be part of the program. Her five children love to be a part of everything and knowing that in doing this, they’re helping others and will also be able to have a home of their own.

Charlene moved here for a fresh start from New York, after the untimely demise of her oldest children’s father. Since moving, they were homeless for the first five months and slept on a friend’s floor. After finding a place to live, Charlene has returned to college, majoring in Human Services after having to leave high school to focus on her children. Since moving to Delaware, she has earned her high school diploma, her CNA license and driver’s license.

Charlene and her children have started in the CDHFH homeownership program. Her children can attend so many different activities and lessons that were unattainable in New York because it was unaffordable. Once she moves into her own home, she will not have to worry about rent fluctuations or of being homeless again. She and her children will have the space they need to learn and grow.
