History

Central Delaware Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1990 as the Kent County affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International.

Over the past 35 years, Central Delaware Habitat has built and/or renovated almost 90 homes, providing much needed housing solutions to over 400 adults and children. Since 2009, Central Delaware has increased its homeownership capacity from serving one home buyer a year to partnering with eight to ten families and individuals annually.

Our housing program is unique; partnering with communities that we serve, ensuring that our future homeowners are able to make the positive change they want to see in the world. Our homeownership program helps families and individuals achieve their dream of owning a home. Future Habitat homeowners have the unique opportunity to build their own home with CDHFH staff and volunteers. Our future Habitat home buyers are required to collaborate in the construction of their home, participate in CDHFH events, and build financial independence. You will be required to attend an Informational Orientation to begin the process of your application.

Central Delaware Habitat neighborhood revitalization initiative began in 2011 as we began acquiring property in the Town of Frederica which resulted in selling 14 homes to qualified homebuyers. It has since grown into a thriving repairs program, serving an average 200 families and individuals per year.

Now, Central Delaware Habitat is focusing in downtown Dover with the goals of increasing homeownership, improving the housing stock, reducing crime and increasing economic development.

Our first ReStore opened in July 2007 and has grown from one employee to ten, plus many volunteers to keep the store running and growing. The ReStore combines donated furniture, household goods, construction materials, collectables, etc. with some new product inventory in a retail setting to generate a sales profit. The profits are used to support our programs. We moved to our third and final location in June 2019 on South Dupont Highway.
