What Can I Do?
When most people think of volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, they imagine themselves swinging a hammer. We certainly need folks to do that but we also have many more volunteer opportunities. Here are some of the ways you can help…
Our homes are built almost entirely by volunteers, both skilled and unskilled. Even if you’ve never picked up a hammer in your life, we can use your help. You’ll be working side by side with other volunteers and the partner family (who contribute hundreds of hours of sweat equity toward their new home). All tools, equipment, and instruction needed are provided by our site supervisor. Construction volunteers must be age 16 or older.
Showtime & Finish
Our Saturday routine begins sharply at 8am. Around 12 noon, lunch is typically provided to us by a gracious sponsor, and the day ends around 2:30pm. Our end of day, however, will depend on the work accomplished and the ability to get to a good stopping point.
What Do I Wear?
Open-toes shoes are prohibited, so please come prepared with sneakers or work shoes. Build sites do not have grass, therefore, it is recommended not to wear new or fancy shoes that you wouldn’t want to dirty up a little bit. The same can apply to clothing, as our work is completely hands-on. Apply logic to the season of the year to dress appropriately, but come in clothing that can withstand a little hard work.
What will I Be Doing on the site?
We expect that the majority of our volunteers will have limited experience with home improvement, and we welcome you to our site. This is a place of learning and teamwork. Throughout the day, you will be guided through the tasks and never made to take on more than you are willing to do. We have tasks of all nature and all skill levels that can aid us on our build and welcome people from all walks of life.
What is the Adult Waiver Form?
This form is required by all Habitat for Humanity organizations because of the conditions we operate under. This form must be signed prior to volunteering on any work site so that Habitat for Humanity does not fall subject to a legal dispute should any unfortunate accident occur. You can click the button to the right to download the form and bring it with you, or you may fill one out at the build site. Trained individuals are on site at all times work is being performed and this should not deter you from enjoying a day with us!
Do volunteers have to stay the entire day?
No, of course you don’t! We appreciate any and all help that willing individuals such as yourself lend to us. We do encourage volunteers to contribute an entire day’s work so we can reach our aimed goals, but know that outside circumstances often limit one’s ability to do so.
What are the different ways to volunteer?
Our primary source of contribution lies in volunteering time and/or monetary donations towards the current project we are building. There are various other routes that one can pursue as well, however! Often, our other events can use help as well. The ReStore, which sells home improvement items, relies on its volunteers to open. Throughout the year, we also have fundraising activities that require the assistance of willing volunteers as well. The best choice is to contact us for further information, as our needs in various departments change during the course of the year. Lastly, the best thing you can do for Habitat is word of mouth. Tell your friends! Grab a flyer and take it to your business!
Schedule a Team Build Day and bring out members of your company, class, church, or organization to volunteer with us on our construction sites.
The ReStore is open Tuesdays — Saturdays and sells new and used home furnishings and building materials to the public at great discounts. Volunteers organize and move merchandise on to the sales floor and assist customers. Perfect if you love helping other shoppers! Learn more about volunteer opportunities in our ReStore.
